Summer Weather Continues Thunderstorms

Severe Risk Thursday Low Humidity Heads for Long Island

Some of the downpours made it to Long Island last night though the thunderstorms responsible were in a weakening phase. Today we have no thunderstorm issues. Long Island is seeing sunshine through a bit of a smoky haze which is something we have seen a lot of lately. Thank the Western US wildfires for that. Other than passing clouds it should be a nice afternoon. Highs will be into the 80s away from the ocean. Humidity levels are high but not out of control. Other than an odd pop up downpour there are no weather issues for the rest of today and into tonight.

Other than the odd shower or thunderstorm the regional and local radars are quiet. Tonight will be a warm humid night with overnight lows in the mid 60s in cool spots in the Pine Barrens to near or just over 70 in warmer more urban like settings.

Let us move on to Thursday when a strong cold front and upper trough head our way. It will be very humid Thursday as dew points rise above 70. Because of clouds, temperatures Thursday probably won’t get much of above 80. It looks like we will see scattered renegade downpours around in the morning and early afternoon in between breaks of hazy sun. Then showers and thunderstorms become more numerous to our west and head eastward during the afternoon and evening.

This looks to be a rather active front and as always on Long Island, figuring out whether the storms survive or not as they move east is always a frustrating exercise. The upper trough and the direction that it is coming front (northwest) suggests that some stronger thunderstorm cells should survive their trips from northwest to southeast. There is less impact from the cooler ocean which likes to make the atmosphere much more stable on a south wind. The wind tomorrow should be southwest. We also have a developing wave on the front as it passes us and that can sometimes add a few fireworks. As always we sit back and watch the radars when the time comes.

We should point out that Long Island is in the Storm Prediction Center’s marginal risk zone for severe weather but that also includes a 2 percent tornado risk which we don’t see here too often. This leads me to suspect that these storms will probably hold on to their strength as they move through especially since the atmosphere will be very unstable and we have strong support from the upper trough.

Friday a new less humid air mass starts to arrive in the afternoon so we will have leftover clouds early in the day giving way to sunshine later in the day. Highs will be in the 80s. Humidity levels will drop during Friday afternoon. Saturday will be a lovely start to the weekend and a nice finish to the month of July. Sunshine will take highs to the upper 70s to near 80. Sunday brings another front and another chance for showers and thunderstorms.
