Ocean Winds Shift to West Temperatures Rise 90 Degrees Possible Sunday

The impact of Wednesday’s back door cold front was certainly felt yesterday as temperatures struggled in the 60s and lower 70s most of the day. This starts to change today as the impact of the wind off the ocean lessens and winds begin to slowly turn to the west over the weekend. This not only sets us up for higher temperatures but we could perhaps make a run for 90 degree highs on Sunday on Long Island!

Other than some patchy clouds to the north and east we should see a fair amount of sunshine today. Temperatures should top out in the 70s inland and 60s along the shore and East End. Temperatures will be a few degrees higher today than yesterday. Humidity levels are low today and will remain low through Saturday.

Over the weekend the impact of the ocean wind will diminish as winds shift more to the west. This begins Saturday. We will see sunshine of Saturday and highs will head back into the 80s away from the ocean. No showers or thunderstorms are forecast for Saturday.

Sunday is going to be a hot day and I think we could see 90 degree highs Sunday afternoon as winds go west to northwest and a cold front pushes south across Upstate NY and moves through Long Island Sunday evening. We will throw in the chance for a thunderstorm. The humidity does come up some on Sunday but not enough to make it too uncomfortable. Also the front doesn’t have a lot of support but it might be enough to trigger an isolated strong thunderstorm and we will watch for that chance.

LONGER RANGE OUTLOOK INTO NEXT WEEK

Monday brings a quick shot of cooler air and we will have plenty of sunshine with a nice breeze and highs in the 70s just about everywhere. The strong upper ridge over the east is going to weaken and move west over the weekend but then it comes back in a weaker form in the Eastern US for Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. That will take temperatures back into the 80s Tuesday and upper 80s and lower 90s next Wednesday. That will come ahead of a stronger cold front and a solid chance for late day Thunderstorms. We will deal with the Memorial Day weekend weather separately later today.
