Long Island’s First Summer Weekend, Well Sort Of

This spring has been littered with one disastrous weekend after another and long stretches of gloom and doom since early April. As happens almost every year sometime in mid May we get a switch flipped and suddenly we go from 40 to 90 degrees. The problem with getting hot in May is that we still have a cold ocean and that will bring a sea breeze inland Friday and again Saturday. More on this in a moment. Firstly we have tonight and Thursday morning to get through and that means some rain. The satellite shows clouds increasing from the west. We have a warm front cold front combination moving over us early Thursday.

As clouds increase so do the radar echos to the west but we still have some time. They won’t arrive until after midnight or so but then it is rain into Thursday morning for Long Island with a few heavier downpours. A rumble or two of thunder can’t be ruled out either. Lows will be in the upper 40s and lower 50s. Once the rain ends Thursday morning we will likely sit in clouds much of the rest of the day with just into the 60s.

Friday temperatures will rise to our west into the mid to upper 80s (west and northwest of NYC) but for Long Island the issue will be the wind direction and that will be south southeast all day. While we will enjoy sun like everyone else the temperatures are going to be about 10 degrees cooler with highs reaching near or jiust over 80 along the North Shore, 70s just about everywhere else and 60s or so at the beaches. At least it will be a nice day.

Saturday will be the warmest of the 3 weekend days. We will see sunshine. More importantly will be the wind dierection which will be from the southwest and not south which cuts down on the air exposed to the cold ocean. Highs inland north of the Long Island Expressway will reach 85 to 90 degrees, 70s along the south shore coast, upper 60s to mid 70s East End and 80s everywhere else. Sunday will be another very warm day with highs reaching the 80s with sunshine and a few clouds. It looks like the next cold front will not arrive until later Sunday night so for now we are leaving thunderstorms out of the forecast through the daytime Sunday. It is rather likely we will go through the entire weekend with no rain for the first time ni many weeks and it will feel like summer for at least a couple of days.
