Long Island Weather Nice Start To August Unsettled Wednesday Through Friday

We enjoyed a beautiful day of weather on Long Island today with sunshine and just some passing clouds. Temperatures topped out in the upper 70s. Dew points were in the low and mid 50s making for low humidity. You can’t do much better for the early part of August. Now we head into a night of clear skies with most lows in the range of 60 to 65 with a few 50s in the pine barrens. Air conditioners are getting a bit of a break and the houses are getting some nice fresh Canadian air.

The satellite picture shows a frontal boundary offshore and still far enough east where it is not an issue for now. The radars both locally and regionally are nice and quiet and should remain so into Wednesday.

The offshore front is going nowhere thanks to a strong upper high to the east. To our west and north we have high pressure from New England southward into the Central Appalachians setting us up with a northeast wind. Tuesday should start sunny but some high and middle clouds will begin to slowly increase as the day wears on but it should be no worse than partly sunny. Highs Tuesday will reach the upper 70s to around or just over 80 in spots and the humidity will remain reasonable.

Wednesday we see the offshore frontal boundary drift westward and it will start to buckle a bit as low pressure develops in the Carolinas and moves northeast on the boundary. Clouds will be around on Wednesday and Long Island could get clipped by a few showers or a period of rain late in the day or certainly Wednesday night into Thursday. Wednesday highs will be in the 70s thanks to the cloud cover. The south southwest flow in the upper atmosphere will still be with us into Friday. Once the first wave moves out early Thursday it looks like we get a break and then a second wave comes up for Thursday night into Friday with another period of rain. Temperatures both Thursday and Friday will be into the 70s and I don’t expect much of any sun on both days. After the last wave moves by Friday the frontal boundary disintegrates and high pressure builds in from off the ocean. This brings as back to very warm and humid conditions for the weekend with some sun both Saturday and Sunday and the chance for a scattered downpour or a thunderstorm. Most highs over the weekend will be back into the 80s and the humidity will be much higher than what you are experiencing now.
