Long Island Much Cooler Before Heat Returns Wednesday

Cautious Optimism Memorial Day Weekend

Sunday’s heat is now gone and we are in a new air mass to start the week. There are leftover clouds around this morning and dry air is trying to move southward from New England. At the same time we are seeing clouds to the west as the next round of changes will already begin to get underway later today. Look for partly sunny skies today overall. Temperatures today will hold mostly in the upper 60s to around 70 degrees. This is a one day shot as we are headed back into the heat for Wednesday with another round of near record high temperatures.

Tuesday will be cloudy to partly sunny. A warm front goes by to our north and we are not expecting any showers from this. Highs will be in the low to mid 70s Tuesday and then we turn the heat switch on for Wednesday. With westerly winds and sunshine, Wednesday highs could reach 90 to perhaps as high as 95 degrees assuming we get enough sunshine.

A cold front will  move through Wednesday evening and it could produce a scattered thunderstorm when it passes. The Storm Prediction Center has Long Island in an area of general thunderstorm risk but for now it lies just outside the zone of severe weather risk. Thursday looks to be dry with some sunshine. Highs will be in the mid 70s to around 80 degrees.

LONG RANGE OUTLOOK MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND

The problem going into this weekend is that everything in the atmosphere will be slowing down. We will see some rain develop from west to east Friday afternoon and it could last into Saturday morning. Temperatures Friday will settle into the 60s once the rain starts and then eventually into the 50s Friday night.

We are going to take the more optimistic view of the European model vs the GFS over the weekend. The GFS takes forever to get the trough in the east offshore and linger clouds and rain on and off into Sunday. The European seems to me to have the more logical solution of a trough swinging east and offshore Saturday suppressing the frontal boundary southward and getting rain out of the way. So at the moment we will be cautiously optimistic calling for leftover clouds giving way to some sun from north to south Saturday. Temperatures will be on the cool side with highs in the mid 60s to lower 70s (depending on how much sun). Sunday and Monday will see some sunshine. Highs will be in the mid 60s to low 70s Sunday and low to mid 70s on Monday. This again assumes that the pessimistic GFS model is wrong about lingering energy along the East Coast all weekend.
