Long Island Cools Off Chance Showers Friday Memorial Day Weekend Outlook

We are enjoying a nice weather day as a cold front passed last night. Temperatures are back to the 70s this afternoon and humidity levels have dropped off nicely. It was an early taste of summertime this past weekend. This week will be a bit different as a high builds to the northeast over the next couple of days. This means we have to deal with an onshore flow though it doesn’t appear that we will be getting into a full fledged gloom and doom type scenario.

There is a large area of rain to our south and some of that is moving into range of the regional radar. I think that rain stays to our south and that should just leave us in clouds tonight with lows tonight in the mid to upper 50s. As high pressure builds to the north tonight and Tuesday and slides to Nova Scotia midweek it puts us in line for an onshore (wind off the ocean) flow.

This not going to a gloom and doom scenario but the flow from the east and northeast will bring some clouds Tueday but we will have some  in the mix too. Highs will be mostly in the 60s. Tuesday night some low clouds will likely move in and they should burn off to some sun on Wednesday. Highs will be in the upper 50s on the East end and in the 60s everywhere else.

Thursday as the next cold front approaches, we will see winds turn more southeast which means more moisture and more clouds. There could be some light rain or drizzle or even a shower or two. Highs will be in the mid 60s to around 70. Friday that front will move through with a chance for showers and thunderstorms. Highs will be in the 70s. There are notable differences between the two main models on just exactly how this plays out for the weekend. The European implies the front moves along and goes through and we wind up with a nice holiday weekend as a ridge builds in the east.

The gfs however shows the next low slowing down and cutting off Friday and sliding to the east Saturday pass near or just to our south which would bring showers Friday and some leftover rain or showers Saturday. We have been leaning on the more positive European solution which brings sun Saturday with highs in the 70s. Sunday and Monday we will have some sunshine both days with highs 85 to near 80 Sunday and into the 80s Monday. The GFS would say Saturday would be a loss but Sunday and Monday would turn out okay. Memorial Day weekend is the one holiday weekend in the summer where you are likely to lose at least one day. Worst case scenario is we get 2 out of 3 for the weekend but we think that 3 for 3 of good weather is plausible.
