Long Gloom Doom Rain Continue Through Saturday Mothers Day Clouds Continue

Gale Warnings are posted for the Long Island coastal waters as low pressure heads across the Central Appalachians and will park itself off the Maryland coast Saturday and Sunday. We have seen rain today and ti continues tonight as the radar shows rain with some patches of moderate rain moving from southwest to northeast. It is a raw dam night as temperatures have settled in the upper 40s to around 50 degrees. Don’t expect much of a break overnight. A couple of minor plusses. One is that even though this would normally be a coastal flooding situation, we are at the low point of the lunar cycle so the moon won’t be impacting tides. The second is while we will finish up with an inch to an inch and of rain, it is being spread out over 36 hours so there should not be any road flooding except maybe in a few of the usual suspect spots.

Long Island will have a cloudy rainy gloom and doom type Saturday. It is a rather simple forecast with raw damp conditions. The northeast to east wind will pick up as the day wears on as the pressure gradient begins to tighten. We will see some gale force gusts at times especially near the shore. Temperatures will be in the low 60s much of the time. It will just be a miserable day.

During Saturday night the low will start to pivot a bit though not moving much. This is where the forecast gets a little tricky. The rain should taper off and end Saturday night but with the low to the south and not moving much, the counterclockwise rotation will certainly keep clouds over Long Island on Sunday. In cases like these sometimes patches of rain or drizzle can come sweeping in from the east and we will hold on to that possibility. Highs Sunday will be in the 50s. Next week for Long Island is a little uncertain. We could still be stuck in low clouds on Monday but if the low to the south drifts further south as forecast, we could see improving weather conditions on Tuesday with temperatures back into the 60s. There is no guarantee on the improvement at the mement. Enjoy this weekend as best you can.
