Blocking Makes Things Slightly Complicated For Long Island Weekend Outlook

We are sitting here in this blocking pattern and thankfully Long Island is sitting on the northern edge of a coastal low off North Carolina. The counterclockwise flow around the low both at the surface and way up in the atmosphere continues to be from the east so we are getting clipped by occasional clouds. We also still have the east wind which is keeping temperatures down. We will average it out and call it partly sunny for this aftenroon. We are not seeing any rain on the radar offshore so we are not expecting any showers. Temperatures are in the mid to upper 60s in spite of the gusty northeast wind. The air from the north is actually warmer than to the south so that is another positive.

We will keep this flow going into Thursday. Clouds will roll in tonight from the east with lows in the 50s. Then those clouds burn off to sunshine Thursday. Highs will be in the 60s inland. We might even see low 70s in Western Nassau County while at the immediate shore especially shorelines exposed to northeast winds, it will likely be 10 degrees or so cooler in the afternoon.

Things get a bit tricky starting Friday as the block breaks down. Winds start to turn more southeast and that will mean more moisture and more clouds but I’m going to lean to the idea of changeable sky conditions which includes some sun in the mix. Highs will reach into the lower 70s inland and hold in the 60s along the coast. Saturday and Sunday will bring more clouds and some shower risks in there. It won’t be a washout on either day but we will need to watch for showers. Highs will be in the mid 60s to low 70s both days. Monday brings a cold front and chance for late day thunderstorms. Highs will be into the 70s.
